Brick Rip and Dig Ltd is a Birkenhead-based construction contractor covering the whole Wirral peninsula and the wider Merseyside area. We carry out demolition and soft strip, cladding removal and recladding, groundworks and excavation, and brickwork and structural openings, for homeowners, landlords, developers and principal contractors. Building work is one of the few purchases where people hand over thousands of pounds on the strength of a handshake and a Facebook page. The Wirral has plenty of good trades and a handful who make life miserable for everybody.
So rather than tell you we're the honest ones — which is exactly what the other lot say — here is the checklist. Run it on us. Run it on whoever else you're getting quotes from. The answers will tell you more than any website will.
- Ask for the company number A registered limited company can be checked on the Companies House register in thirty seconds — directors, registered office, filing history. Ours is 16886622. If a contractor cannot give you one, ask why.
- Ask to see the public liability certificate Not a photo of a policy schedule from three years ago. A current certificate, with the insurer, the policy number and the expiry date on it.
- Get the quote in writing, with exclusions A real quote states what is included and, crucially, what is not. A number scrawled on the back of a delivery note is not a quote, it is an opening position.
- Refuse to pay a large cash deposit Staged payments against agreed milestones are normal. A big cash deposit before anyone has lifted a shovel is the single most common way people lose money on building work.
- Ask who is doing the structural calculation If a wall is coming out, a structural engineer sizes the beam and Building Control inspects it. 'We've done hundreds of these' is not a calculation and it is not a sign-off.

Are you a properly registered company?
Yes. Brick Rip and Dig Ltd is registered at Companies House under company number 16886622. Our trading office is on Market Street in Birkenhead and our registered office is at Wirral International Business Park, Bromborough. You can verify all of it on the Companies House register before you commit to anything.
Do you give free quotes?
Yes. We visit the site, look at the actual job rather than a photograph, and issue a written fixed price with a clear scope and a list of what is excluded. No charge for the visit and no obligation.
Do you ask for money up front?
We do not ask for large deposits before starting. Where a job needs significant materials ordered in advance — steel, bricks, plant hire — we agree a staged payment schedule in writing before work begins. Anyone asking for a big cash deposit before they have been near your property is telling you something.
Are you insured?
Yes, we hold public liability insurance and will provide a copy of the certificate before we start on site. Ask any contractor for this. A legitimate one will hand it over without hesitating.
Do you handle Building Control and planning?
For structural work we arrange the structural engineer's calculations and submit the building notice or full plans application, then book and attend the inspection stages. Where planning permission or listed building consent is needed we will tell you at quote stage, before you have spent anything.
